How do you pick up chicks?

im going to be a freshman next year and all my friends r talking about picking up chicks at the mall and the movies and at school, im just wandering how exactly do you do that? i dont really want to be left out when all my guy friends have girlfriends and i dont, so i figured it would be good to know how to get girls to talk to you. thanks
