Prevent ducks from being eaten?

On farms, to keep animals and birds from their fields, they have something that shoots off a gun, of sorts, every 10 - 15 minutes. I don't know what it is called, or where to get it. Farmers should know. Otherwise, you can tie tin foil pie plates along the shoreline, and that should keep the ducks off the shore.
