Can you replace an ebike controller with one of the same voltage but higher power?

I'm trying to replace my faulty ebike controller. However people keep saying increasing the power will increase speed, so was wandering if I can replace my faulty one (36V, 250W) with (36V, 500W) without causing any damage.
